This is why metal frames destroy futon mattresses!

Bad Metal Futon Frame

As you might be able to see in the image, this metal frame is lacking any meaningful support for the futon mattress that has been placed on it. The gap between the “slat bars” has to be almost six inches, creating peaks and valleys in the mattress that are just not comfortable.

So, take this post as a word of caution when you’re thinking about a cheap metal frame. Chances are it’s poorly made and though it costs very little, it will cost you more in the end as it destroys your futon mattresses / back.

Yes with cheap metal frames this is a problem. There two answers to this issue: 1/ Don’t buy a cheap futon frame. 2/ Use pegboard on the base of the futon.
Having run a futon shop and now an online futon website at http://www.futonsfirst.co.uk both answers seem to work. Glenn

Great points Glenn, it’s a shame that people use those cheap frames. But I suppose they do meet a price point.
