Need a deal on a laptop?

With the holidays upon us, finding savings where ever you can is a truly satisfying thing. One area, or item that can be hard to find a great deal on can be a laptop computer. At least before manufacturers and retailers started slashing prices this holiday season. Today I was able to find a laptop at under $400. When I purchased my laptop, Noelle and I spent $1700, so if you can find a deal this year, take it. Who knows how long prices will be reduced this year.

Wall hugger futon love seats are here

For those of you looking for a wall hugger futon frame, in a love seat package, Goodnight Moon Futon has just added love seat and ottoman frames to our popular plantation collection. Our Plantation collection, made from plantation grown rubber wood, has long been a staple of our futon frame selection. It was, however, limited by having only two sizes available (full and queen). With the addition of a full love seat futon option, the Plantation Collection can now fit in tighter spaces and smaller rooms.

Binoculars and more

Yesterday, Noelle and I had two deer in our backyard, a fairly large buck and good size doe. It was really cool, though they were a bit hard too see being about three hundred and fifty to four hundred feet away.
After that I decided to look into some binoculars so we could get a better view of all the wild life around our home in Western Massachusetts.

That’s when I found the Nikon Black Friday Promo at Nikon Promo. The package I first found was totally geared towards hunters (which I’m not), they call it the “Ultimate Hunter’s Package”

That comes with:

  • ProStaff 3-9×40 Riflescope with BDC Reticle
  • ProStaff Laser Rangefinder
  • Silent Technology Rangefinder Case
  • Mastering a Long-range shot with BDC DVD
  • $50 NikonProGear Gift Card

All those items come together in a great package, saving you $144.90 on hunting equipment. But for those of us who don’t hunt, they also carry some good binoculars at decent prices. So, if you’re looking for a high-quality, rugged binoculars, Nikon Sport Optics has got something for you – for a limited time only, get an extra $20 off on Nikon Action Extreme ATB 10×50 Binoculars!

Maybe shopping online is safer?!?!?

Black Friday Shoppers
When I first saw this image (above) I thought it was a scene from a new zombie movie that I hadn’t seen yet. But, then I realized it’s just Black Friday bargain hunters whipped up in a frenzy over a few bucks off.

If you think I just went off the deep end, you might not be too far off, (I am a bit paranoid about going holiday shopping - it’s dangerous). Or maybe you are? I just read a new story about a man who got trampled to death at a Walmart yesterday by Black Friday Bargain shoppers. Walmart did end up closing the store, but they reopened three hours later. Hmm, how do you convey sarcasm in a blog post? (Scratches Head)

Anyhow, if you don’t want to get caught up in the stress or maybe get trampled this holiday season maybe Amazon or one of you favorite eCommerce stores is the safer bet. You still have plenty of time is you start now.

Here’s the whole story via By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press Writer Colleen Long – Fri Nov 28, 5:15 pm ET

NEW YORK – A Wal-Mart worker was killed Friday when “out-of-control” shoppers desperate for bargains broke down the doors at a 5 a.m. sale. Other workers were trampled as they tried to rescue the man, and customers shouted angrily and kept shopping when store officials said they were closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.

At least four other people, including a woman who was eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or minor injuries, and the store in Valley Stream on Long Island closed for several hours before reopening.

Shoppers stepped over the man on the ground and streamed into the store. When told to leave, they complained that they had been in line since Thursday morning.

Nassau police said about 2,000 people were gathered outside the store doors at the mall about 20 miles east of Manhattan. The impatient crowd knocked the man, identified by police as Jdimytai Damour of Queens, to the ground as he opened the doors, leaving a metal portion of the frame crumpled like an accordion.

“This crowd was out of control,” said Nassau police spokesman Lt. Michael Fleming. He described the scene as “utter chaos.”

Dozens of store employees trying to fight their way out to help Damour were also getting trampled by the crowd, Fleming said.

Items on sale at the store included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as “The Incredible Hulk” for $9.

Damour, 34, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 6 a.m., police said. The exact cause of death has not been determined.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman was taken to a hospital, where she and the baby were reported to be OK, said police Sgt. Anthony Repalone.

Police said criminal charges were possible in the case, but Fleming said it would be difficult to identify individual shoppers. Authorities were reviewing surveillance video.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., based in Bentonville, Ark., called the incident a “tragic situation” and said the employee came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store.

“The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority,” said Dan Fogleman, a company spokesman. “At this point, facts are still being assembled and we are working closely with the Nassau County Police as they investigate what occurred.”

Kimberly Cribbs, who witnessed the stampede, said shoppers were acting like “savages.”

“When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling ‘I’ve been on line since yesterday morning,’” she said. “They kept shopping.”

Shoppers around the country line up early outside stores on the day after Thanksgiving in the annual bargain-hunting ritual known as Black Friday. It got that name because it has historically been the day when stores broke into profitability for the full year.

Sears is helping us give to our military families

This morning I saw an ad for the Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry and thought I’d check it out to see how it works. We all know that the holidays can be a stressful time, but imagine having to pull it all off when your loved one is deployed, it must feel like you have no one to help you. But, programs like the one offered by Sears allows regular Americans to make donations to a fund for military families. Sears then spreads the donation amount among the families registered before the holidays so those families can try to make their Christmas or Hanukkah memorable.

The Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry website gives you lots of info. You can read the stories of the families already helped, see what people are wishing for (it turns out to be a majority of kids shoes), and make a donation. I really enjoyed reading the stories of those who have benefitted from this program, it is nice to know that we’re helping real people and their families. So check out the Sears Heroes at Home Wish Registry and see if you can make a difference this year.

Traditional Japanese Homes - Part One

This morning I was thinking a bit about where the futon came from and how unrecognizable it is when compared to traditional Japanese style futon mattresses. In my search to find a few good images of traditional Japanese style futons, I found Robert Brockob design and fell in love with his Japanese styled house in San Francisco. The clean lines, use of natural woods, and minimal design were great in my opinion. But, thats my take. What do you all think.
